When masts walk the Earth
Apr. 15th, 2008 08:16 pmOn Sunday afternoon, Adam and I set out to go to Donnington castle (which has real gargoyles), but after seeing a flash or two of lightening, we went storm-chasing. We were not successful at pinning down the thunderstorm, but did go up to the hill at Hannington in the hopes of getting high enough to see distant strikes, and walked out to see the TV mast. It dwarfed us. It was a weird thing, all stalky and spindly, with tendril-like cables anchoring it to the earth. I felt like it might wrench itself free at any minute and go striding across the landscape like something out of an H. G. Wells novel. I spent quite a while afterwards feeling like I was in the Midwest, something to do with the huge grey skies, yellow fields, sudden influx of large caravans and the sci-fi movie feeling.
