I woke early this morning to dense mist, and saw two deer in the field behind the house. The stag looked up as he heard me opening the window to photograph him, and I was close enough to see the velvety covering on his antlers. There was something a little bit haunting about seeing them peacefully grazing out there, and a couple of hours later, it struck me that the strangeness was seeing large wild animals at such close quarters. All over the world, animals are being squeezed into smaller and smaller gaps between the humans, and inevitably, many will die out. I don't suppose deer will become endangered in the UK for a while, but it made me feel sad for all the species that are gone forever, and all the ones which soon will be.
