Butchart Gardens
Oct. 13th, 2008 09:09 pmIt was Canadian Thanksgiving today, so I visited the Butchart Gardens. The weather was mostly mist and drizzle, with a bit of quite heavy rain; good weather for wandering around, thanks to the clear plastic umbrellas provided in abundance for visitor use. The gardens were created as a private garden in the late Victorian era, and they retain the tradition of planting new flowers seasonally, so there were rather too many flowers for me in much of the gardens. The Japanese garden was perfect, though. Lots of fresh green ferns, tiny streams, little bridges (I especially liked the red wooden bridges), pagodas and seats in unexpected corners, greeny-blue shrubs cut into cloud shapes, and lots of fiery red acers. There was also a hole cut in one of the bordering hedges, which made a window looking out onto the cove.
I ate my pumpkin pie tonight, but it turns out that pumpkin pie is not especially nice.
