Abandoned spoons
Mar. 28th, 2008 12:31 pmI often seem to grab food on the fly from supermarkets when travelling around, and since I hate ready-packed sandwiches, I usually fall back on bananas and chocolate. In these situations, I almost always find myself standing longingly in front of the yoghurt section, thinking "Damn! I have no spoon. Maybe I could just lick it out of the pot? ...Probably not.". Well, this changes today. After months of thinking I should carry a spoon with me, I have finally tucked one into the pocket of my rucksack ready for the next time I need to satisfy a yoghurt craving.
A couple of years back, when I first heard the song The Great Beyond by R.E.M., I misheard "I'm breaking through, I'm bending spoons" as "I'm breaking through abandoned spoons"... and something about the song, or my mood that day, has meant this phrase gives me a feeling of overcoming obstacles and getting things done. It's a fantastic song to put on when I want to feel optimistic and knuckle down. It seemed strangely appropriate for my spoon-related task.
