Wonderful weather
Jan. 15th, 2008 04:26 pmI went out to go to the Post Office yesterday, and no sooner had I stepped out on to the pavement than I noticed a couple of big spots of rain. Deciding that I couldn't be bothered to go back for my waterproof, I strode out in good spirits, singing Ageless Beauty. With beautiful timing, I reached the verse starting with "Oceans won't freeze..." just as the heavens opened and a huge gust of wind and hail scattered all the brightly-wrapped schoolkids and their mums along the pavement like skittles.
A heavy rain settled in as the sky turned to an apocalyptic combination of iron grey and bruise yellow. Stray rays of sunlight pushed through the clouds to turn buildings and puddles to a burnished coppery colour. Everything looked surreal, as if it didn't belong to the right time of day. As I set off up the hill to Hampstead, I was travelling towards the end of the rainbow that appeared as the rain started to ease.
Later, as I walked back past the church and down the narrow cobbled alley, there was a soft crescent moon in the early evening blue sky, and a slight smell of wildness lingered in the air.
