A Pan-Dimensional Travesty
Dec. 23rd, 2007 12:37 amHark! What is that high-pitched whirring sound? Methinks it is Douglas Adams, spinning in his grave at approximately 40,000 rpm.
So, I just watched the film called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike the most excellent book of the same name.
Imagine if someone were to whiz up Mr. Adam's books in a blender with few big dollops of saccharine, and then tried to shoehorn them into the mould of a standardised, low-grade rom-com, with no regard at all for such things as "plot" or "continuity". It is a shame, since they had some big names, such as Bill Bailey voicing the dolphins and Stephen Fry voicing the Book, and I really did like the casting: Ford, Trillian, Arthur and Zaphod were all great, and I liked the way they incorporated Zaphod's second head underneath his first.
My advice would be to curl up with the book instead. And I am usually fairly lenient on film adaptations of books. I loved Lord of the Rings. Scrap Tom Bombadil? Result.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I'm a moron, I'm a moron
I'm a moron, yes I am
Played with pencil, not too careful
Now I've got lead in my hand
Oh dear...
